Off the Mainstream: A New (New) Czech Wave?

Landscape of Destiny (Krajina osudu)
Pavel Kolaja / 60 min. / 2009

Nothing Against Nothing (Nic proti nicemu)
Petr Marek / 96 min. / 2001

//////////////////////////////////////////////ENGLISH VERSION

Off the Mainstream: A New (New) Czech Wave? /// New Czech Film Festival
FR 21.10 – SU 23.10 / Muzeul Taranului Roman

The Czech mainstream cinema, growing stronger since the ninetees, is well established now. It exists, and brings the Czechs inside the cinema halls.
Yet, this time it looks like we are witnessing something else, sort of a cream on this mainstream cake… New, fresh, author driven, independent and inspiring films. Indeed, there are signs that show us that something is on the way in the Czech cinema. Is it a phenomenon, a „Wave“ as they like to say in the movie world? The pro’s seem quite solid, credible and trustworthy: these new Czech movies are back on the international film festivals, while the mainstream stays with the TV viewers…

80 Letters ( 80 Dopisů) / director: Vaclav Kadrnka / 75 min. /2011
Special screening for friends of the Czech Centre/ admission free

80 Letters, the excellent feature-film debut of Václav Kadrnka, left a very positive impression at this year’s Berlinale, and it’s been present since then to all major festivals. Autobiographically based, the source of the film are the memories of the director and the surviving correspondence between his parents. The story takes place in Czechoslovakia in 1987 –  after the father has defected to England and the mother and her son are trying to leave the country to reunite with him. Husband, wife, child – even at a distance they are still together.

Landscape of Destiny (Krajina Osudu) / director: Pavel Kolaja / 60 min. / 2009

Documentary by Pavel Kolaja dedicated to Ivan Vyskočil – author, actor, pedagog and psychologist, is his original testimony about the essence of dialogical proceedings, and at the same time his portrait. This exceptional visual poem, shot during the course of several years, managed to reveal the source of his general creative attitude to life. The creators managed to capture his cheerfulness, inventiveness and free-mindedness.

Sentiment / director: Tomas Hejtmanek / 72 min. / 2003
trailer

A film essay inspired by the intimate relationship of Tomáš Hejtmánek with the director František Vláčil, a legend of the Czech cinematography. Sentiment is a fusion of reminiscence, feature film and a documentary. It is also a multiple citation honoring thinking, feeling and the creative process. No biography or a profile, but an autobiography through an interview, a continuation of the original confession.

Nothing Against Nothing (Nic Proti Nicemu) / director: Petr Marek / 96 min. / 2001
trailer

An ironic comedy about the boundless tolerance of the current thirty-something generation. A young couple arrive incognito at the foundation meeting of a non-profit organizaion for people who were adopted in childhood, aimed at the promotion of adoption in society as a whole. The situation gets out of hand, forcing everyone to improvise and to take on roles they are ill-fitted to adopt. Whether these are the roles of self-proclaimed leader, femme fatale, rebel, ingénue, or soul-searching paedophile, prompted by a specific and centrifugal sense of drama, each reveals their motivation and their secret, thus unleashing further bizarre and comical situations.

Sister ( Sestra) / director: Vit Pancir /65 min. / 2008

An artist seeks both romantic and creative companionship in this drama adapted from the novel by Jachym Topol. The hero is a designer in his early thirties who works for an independent drama company. Potok is dissatisfied with his work and his life, and has come to view almost everything around him with a sense of ennui and disgust, but his view of the world around him becomes less bleak when he meets Cerna,  a beautiful woman with whom he feels an emotional and intellectual connection. Potok and Cerna decide to abandon life in the city for a more pastoral lifestyle, but they find themselves surrounded by people who don’t understand their creative outlook and make little secret of their dislike of the new couple.
