AREAS OF CONFLU(X)ENCE
International conference on Art, Space & Technology in the Digital Age

4-6 octombrie / Astra Studio, Piaţa Huet nr.2, Sibiu

Areas of conflu(x)ence propune o dezbatere internationala despre relatia dintre arta si tehnologie in era digitala, concentrandu-se asupra impactului mediei in viata noastra.

In 1971, a format impreuna cu Andreas Mannik “The Kitchen”, teatru de arte media.

ENGLISH VERSION

Areas of conflu(x)ence proposes an international debate on the relationship between art and technology in the present digital era, focusing on the impact of the new media in our lives.
What kind of models are we using in perceiving and understanding our new environment? If the tools we use have an influence on the way we deal with our environment, how do we use their potentiality? What traps are to be avoided? What do we expect from technology? By trying to answer all these questions, the conference intends to identify the present condition of our data driven lives and the factors that influence it.

In the frame of the conference are going to be projected Woody Vasulka’s Buffalo lectures.

Steina (1940, Islanda) and Woody (1937, Cehoslovacia) Vasulka
The Vasulkas met in Prague in the early 1960’s, married, and moved to New York City in 1965. There, Steina worked as a freelance musician and Woody as a multiscreen film editor, experimenting with electronic sounds, stroboscopic lights, and, by 1969, with video. In 1971, together with Andreas Mannik, they founded The Kitchen, a media arts theater.
The Vasulkas’ investigations into analog and digital processes and their development of electronic imaging tools, which began in the early 1970s, place them among the primary architects of an expressive electronic vocabulary of image-making. They charted the evolving formulation of a syntax of electronic imaging as they articulate a processual dialogue between artist and technology.
