ENGLISH VERSION

Simple living (aka voluntary simplicity) is about living an examined life – one in which one has determined what is important, or “enough,” discarding the rest. Living simply does not require adherence to a rigid set of rules, but rather it challenges the individual to live consciously and deliberately.
Artists can pursue simplicity in different ways and for a variety of motivations or reasons such as rejection of consumerism, removing the cultural noise or anti-materialism. Some may emphasize an explicit rejection of “westernised values”, while others choose to create in a simplistic manner for reasons of personal taste, a sense of fairness, or personal economy.

The exhibition Simple Living will offer a series of (video)works to illustrate what simplicity is – and is not – and how simplicity can have a transformative effect on the public discourse on contemporary art. The chosen works will be anchored both in “descriptive” practices and in the “plastic” uses of the video image.

Aimed to be an outline of the Czech young art scene, this exhibition will feature works from 15 artists living in Czech republic and is a collaboration between Czech Center Bucharest and National Brukenthal Museum Sibiu.
