THE MIRACLE OF CANDEAL
El Milagro de Candeal, Spania, 2004, 128 min
Scenariu si regie: Fernando Trueba
VO spaniola / Subtitrari in engleza

ENGLISH VERSION

Tropical rhythms in Bucharest‘s December? Exactly what we need here. Join us and get away from the pre-Christmas stress, dark days and cold. You will not just enjoy it but also learn more about the power of music and talent.

Candeal is a marginal area in the heart of Salvador, the capital of Bahia and home of musician Carlinhos Brown, famed percussionist and leader of the bloco-afro group Timbalada. The film is a stunning parable of how a notorious slum transformed itself into a model community through the power of music, pushed along by Brown’s commitment to the local youth. The film also reveals a larger picture: the encounter of Cuba and Brazil (specifically Havana and Bahia) and the African roots shared by both, as personified by the Grammy Award-winning Cuban pianist Bebo Valdes, as he visits Brown and searches for his African roots in Salvador de Bahia, the blackest of Brazilian cities. From Academy Award-winning director Fernando Trueba.
