Desi Romania pare sa fie astazi un sat fara caini, Bucurestiul este, fara indoiala, un oras plin de caini. Aici, omul si cainele sunt doua specii innodate intim, contopite una-ntr-alta asemenea osanditilor din infernul dantesc. Aici, cainele cu ochi de om  trebuie sa infrunte zilnic omul cu ochi de caine.
Orasul nostru are o populatie de peste 200.000 de caini. Sunt caini saraci sau bogati, caini vagabonzi sau caini care se duc la coafor. Filmul arata viata acestei societati paralele, care este o oglinda a societatii „umane” a Bucurestiului.

Caragiale a fost primul mare scriitor roman care a parasit tara. In ultimul secol, multi altii au gustat din franzela exilului: Eugen Ionesco, Brancusi, Tristan Tzara au devenit personalitati internationale, integrandu-se perfect in cultura tarilor ce i-au „adoptat”. Acest lucru nu s-a intamplat insa si cu Caragiale. Satul de Romania, a plecat din tara si a trait la Berlin intre anii 1904 si 1912. S-a mutat intr-un mediu care reprezenta exact opusul personalitatii lui, felului sau de a fi. Povestea exilului sau este cea a intalnirii dintre Est si Vest, localizata la Berlin, un oras prin care a trecut linia de demarcatie intre doua lumi. La 100 de ani dupa Caragiale, istoria a accentuat si mai puternic diferentele dintre aceste doua parti ale Europei.

I guess you’ve already seen Alexandru Solomon’s last movie, Cold Waves. But do you know what other documentaries he has done over the years? We’ve invited him to come and present two of them: A Dog’s Life & The Sweet Bread of Exile

 

A DOG’S LIFE
During the Ceausescu regime there was a joke about dogs. They say that two dogs meet in the streets of Berlin, and one of them tells the other “I’ve decided to emigrate.” “Where do you intend to go?” asks the other one. “To Romania.” “To Romania? Are you crazy? Why there?” And the former replies: “Because I’ve heard they lead a real dog’s life there!” Like all the jokes of those days, this, has gone out of fashion. What is left, however, is the dogs. And the people. And their common inheritance: a dog’s life.

 

THE SWEET BREAD OF EXILE
Caragiale was the first Romanian writer to leave the country. During the last century many others tasted the sweet bread of exile. Eugen Ionesco, Brancusi, Tristan Tzara became international figures, perfectly integrated in the culture of their host countries. But this is not the case of Caragiale. Fed-up with Romania, he left the country and settled in Berlin in 1904. He moved into an environment that represented the exact opposite of his personality. The story of his exile is the meeting of the Est with the West in Berlin. 100 years after Caragiale, history has emphasized even more the differences between the two worlds.
