În iunie 2012, partidul politic grec de extremă dreapta Zori Aurii a câştigat 7% din voturile parlamentare. Konstantinos Georgousis, student la National Film and Television School (Londra), urmăreşte, în cea mai bună tradiţie observaţională, câţiva membri ai partidului în timp ce aceştia ¨patruleaz㨠străzile din Atena, scriu cu creta, în pieţe, cuvintele „Grecia pentru greci” sau se opresc să bea ceva la terasele oraşului, permanent cu un ochi vigilent aţintit asupra imigranţilor. (Apropo, au multe de spus şi despre români!)

„Suntem oameni normali, decenţi. Ţinem la animalele noastre, ne place când copiii noştri se îmbracă în îngeri sau draci la serbările de la grădiniţă şi vrem să ne păstrăm barul fără ţigani (…sau vietnamezi, dacă tot ne-aţi întrebat!).”

În ultimii ani, cartierul Janov al oraşului Litvinov s-a văzut confruntat cu un aflux semnificativ de ‘familii problematice’ venite de pretutindeni. Acceptarea lor de către comunitatea locală nu e deloc un proces relaxat. Filmat cu răbdare, în manieră analitică, Despre decenţă captează umbrele şi miasmele intoleranţei faţă de minorităţi în rândul unui segment al populaţiei cehe şi îi dezvăluie repercusiunile întunecate în viaţa de zi cu zi.

In June 2012, the far-right Greek political party Golden Dawn won 7% of the parliamentary vote. National Film and Television School (London) student Konstantinos Georgousis follows few party members, in the best fly-on-the-wall tradition, while they patrol the streets of Athens, chalk the words “Greece for the Greeks” in the squares and stop for a drink on café terraces, always keeping a vigilant eye on immigrants. (And yes, they have a lot to say about Romanians, too!)

We are decent, ordinary people. We care for our beloved pets, we love it when our kindergarten children dress as angels or devils, and we want to keep our local pub free of Gypsies (and of those Vietnamese, now that you asked!). They only know how to make children, destroy things and mess around. Blacks can’t change, neither can the Vietnamese, nor the Japanese. That’s their culture. It’s in their genes, just check their history. These days everybody drags their lazy asses to our country.

In recent years, Litvínov’s Janov neighbourhood has seen a substantial influx of ‘problematic’ families from all over the country. Their acceptance by the community is hardly a smooth process. Shot with patience and with a clear-sighted, analytical approach, On Decency captures the smells and the shadows of intolerance towards minorities among a portion of the Czech public, and exposes its dark undercurrents in everyday banal situations.

The excellent use of surveillance footage adds poetry and a reflexive element to the increasingly paranoid dynamics of majority/minority relations in Janov.
