Fortress / NEXT @ Documentary Mondays

Ultimul documentar din seria „Echoes of One World Romania” este chiar cel care a câștigat premiul acestei ediții a festivalului, ales de un grup de liceeni – „Fortress”.

Filmul incepe cu o interdictie: „A nu se filme pe durata stationarii trenului!”. In urmatoarele 70 de minute vom fi invitati sa urmarim viata cotidiana in Republica Moldoveneasca Nistreana (Transnistria), o republica separatista plasata de-a lungul granitei Moldovei cu Ucraina – o asa-zisa ‘democratie modificata’, in care libertatea de exprimare si libertatea de intrunire se afla sub controlul strict al statului. Transnistria are un presedinte ales prin vot, un sistem juridic si pasaport propriu – cel din urma este in mare parte inutil in ceea ce priveste perspectiva unei calatorii in strainatate, dat fiind ca statul nu este recunoscut de nici un alt stat. Viata in Transnistria e dificila, insa presedintele Igor Smirnov insista ca, de fapt, e Raiul pe pamant – si, cu o orchestrare atenta a mesajelor media, plus cateva clipuri electorale excentrice, o parte dintre cetatenii tarii par a se lasa convinsi sa gandeasca similar.

Fortareata ne ofera o perspectiva revelatoare asupra vietii si a lipsei de perspective deschise omului obisnuit in Transnistria. Nimic din agonia zilnica, discreta, a acestui parc de distractii comunist, sculptat in ciment si impodobit cu seceri si ciocane, nu aminteste de acele „revolutii zilnice” care fac tema acestei sectiuni a programului One World Romania. Si totusi, alegerile prezidentiale documentate in film reusesc sa puna capat celor 20 de ani de putere a lui Igor Smirnov. Va duce oare acest lucru spre mai bine?

The film starts with an interdiction: “No shooting while the train is stationed!”. For the next 70 minutes we are swiftly introduced to the daily life of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (Transnistria), a separate republic located on a strip of land along Moldova’s border with Ukraine – a so-called ‘modified democracy’, where freedom of expression and freedom of assembly are under tight state control. Pridnestrovie has its own elected president, legal system and passport; the latter is largely useless when it comes to traveling abroad, as the state is not recognized by any other country apart from itself. Life in Pridnestrovie is difficult, but President Igor Smirnov believes his country to be a paradise on earth – and with some careful orchestration from the media and a couple of eccentric election videos, even some of the country’s citizens start thinking along the same lines.

Fortress offers some revealing snapshots of the lives of ordinary people living in Pridnestrovie. Nothing from the discrete daily agony of this communist theme park carved in concrete and adorned with hammers and sickles, resembles those ‘everyday rebellions’ that provide the topic of this section of our program. And yet, the presidential election documented by the film finally brings an end to the 20-year reign of Igor Smirnov. Will that be for the better?
