And There We Are, in the Middle / Sebastian Brameshuber / Austria, 2014 / 91 min

And There We Are, in the Middle / Sebastian Brameshuber / Austria, 2014 / 91 min

In the sleepy and picturesque Austrian town of Ebensee, three teenagers like so many others are searching for their identity: Andi plays electric guitar and is fascinated by firearms; Michi oscillates between punk rock, Michael Jackson and medieval Austrian customs, while Ramona wants to get a job – and a piercing through her lip. But Ebensee is no ordinary small town. During World War II, one of the deadliest concentration Nazi camps made its home in Ebensee. The past hangs heavy like fog over the entire town. Some work hard to ignore it, while others invite it back time and again. Not long ago, some teenagers that were not so different from Andi, Michi, and Ramona, disrupted the Holocaust commemorations with Nazi salutes – an event that casts a shadow on the lives of all three protagonists. This patient film shows how fluid identity formation actually is and how close apparent extremes are in real life. Deftly combining verité moments from the daily life of the teenagers with interviews with their parents on history and politics, the film is a delicate meditation on the relationship between generations and between historic and personal time in today’s Europe.
