VO aromana / Subtitrari in romana

BEHIND HISTORY
In spatele istoriei, Romania, 2007, 56 min
Regie: Iulian Capsali
VO aromana / Subtitrari in engleza

In anul 1900 un englez, (C.N.E. Eliot) spunea ca poti trai si calatori in Balcani fara sa-i vezi pe aromani sau fara sa auzi vorbindu-se de ei. Odata ce i-ai descoperit insa, risti sa cazi in cealalta extrema si sa-i vezi peste tot. Titlul filmului regizat de Iulian Capsali – In spatele istoriei – poarta in el aceeasi ambiguitate.

ENGLISH VERSION

BALKAN’S DIGEST
Hidden in the depth of the mountains, in the South of Albania, lies Grabova, the most isolated of the five Aromanian
citadels. Due to the recent history of the area, Grabova remains now the biggest Aromanian community, gathering 50 families. It’s story is emblematic for the urban development of Balkan culture.

BEHIND HISTORY
In 1900 an Englishman, C.N.E. Eliot, said that you can live and travel around the Balkans without spotting the Aromanians or even hearing anything about them. But once you have discovered them, you can go as far as to see them everywhere. The title of the film Behind History carries this same ambiguity. It can be understood as referring to their obscured and underground history (Aromanian history is first of all an oral history), but it can also refer to the many times history has been made by Aromanians (the classic citation is that Aromanians are an „engine people”).
The film is a collection of stories about the Aromanians in Albania. How Aromanians survived, what they think about themselves, how they manage their liberty within a state that does not recognize them as a minority are all among the issues discussed by this film. A film which blends humour and melancholy into its music and narrative.
The documentary is dedicated to the memory of Irina Nicolau, who adored story-telling and kept saying that stories encapsulate the most important things in the world.
