Undeva in lume, o dansatoare de step urmarita in timp ce danseaza. Altundeva, oameni fugind de gazul lacrimogen imprastiat de politisti. Doua lumi separate – pana in momentul in care o bresa in spatiu ii permite dansatoarei sa ajunga instantaneu in mijlocul protestelor sociale din centrul orasului Istanbul. Dansatoarea devine martora la manifestatia oamenilor pentru libertate si foloseste ocazia pentru a-si transforma dansul intr-o declaratie de solidaritate. Un milion de pasi – muzica, dans si metafora folosite pentru a vorbi altfel despre actiune civica si protestul din Gezi Park.

Cum poti vorbi despre Iran – o tara pe care ai parasit-o la o varsta frageda, inainte de a fi avut timp sa inveti sa scrii si sa citesti in limba materna? Regizoarea Sanaz Azari s-a nascut in Iran, dar a copilarit in Belgia. In spatele usilor inchise ale unei clase dintr-o scoala din Bruxelles, Sanaz invata sa scrie si sa citeasca in limba persana. Pe banca se afla un manual din vremea Revolutiei Islamice. In fata ei se afla o tabla pe care profesorul ei, un iranian carunt, si el exilat, scrie meticulos cuvinte si propozitii care devin o poarta spre istoria si cultura Iranului. Treptat, metoda didactica a lectiilor se dezvolta intr-un colaj poetic luxuriant care problematizeaza concepte precum libertatea sau revolutia. Apropierea de aceste imagini presupune descoperirea si reinsusirea treptata a unui spatiu personal de libertate in relatie cu limba unei tari altminteri pierdute. Azari se mentine tot timpul invizibila, printr-o tactica menita sa ofere pozitia centrala limbii in sine si persoanei care o preda ca si cum ar performa pe o scena. Da, limba aceasta melodioasa este, intr-adevar, limba ei materna, cu toate ca nu poate deocamdata nici sa o citeasca, nici sa o scrie.

A tap dancer performs, while elsewhere people run from the tear gas of the police. Two worlds apart – if it wasn’t for an unexpected opening in the floor, right in front of the dancer. She decides to jump, and lands in the middle of the social protests in Istanbul. The dancer witnesses the people’s fight for personal freedom and takes the opportunity to transform her dance into a statement of solidarity. One million steps – music, dance and metaphor used to speak differently about civic action and Gezi Park.

How can one talk about Iran today? How can you do it when you left Iran as a child and the Persian language is now completely foreign to you? Sanaz Azari was born in Iran but grew up in Belgium. Behind the closed doors of a classroom in Brussels, she is learning how to read and write in her mother tongue. There is a textbook from the time of the Islamic Revolution on her desk. In front of her, there is a blackboard, on which her teacher, a grey-haired Iranian, exiled as well, carefully traces words and sentences which become a gateway to the history and culture of Iran. Gradually, the didactic method of the lessons evolves into a poetic, visual collage, which introduces the notion of freedom and questions the meaning of a revolution. Getting close into the surface of those images comes down to finding a personal space of freedom as a sort of re-appropriation of one’s mother tongue, one’s country and its culture via film. Azari keeps herself in the background, through a strategy of self-effacement meant to give centrality to language itself and the man who teaches it as if on a theatre stage. That language is indeed her mother tongue, though she can neither read nor write it.
