CHARTER 77 – 30th anniversary

cafekultour.jpg

Seara dedicata Cehiei va fi completata de proiectia filmului Citizen Havel, prezentat in martie si in cadrul festivalului de film documentar dedicat drepturilor omului, One World Romania 2009.

ENGLISH VERSION

Czech Centre Bucharest participates for the first time in the 5th edition of the festival CafeKultour – Week of Cafés in Timişoara, organized by the Frech Institute. All the CafeKultour events are taking place in bars, cafés, libraries… this being originally the reaction to the lack of appropriate spaces for newly emerging cultural activities in the city.

The series of photographic portraits, realized by the international agency CHOICE IMAGES founded by several photojournalists from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland expresses an appreciation of the stand taken by dissidents and signatories of Charter 77 during the period of Normalization in the 1970s and 1980s, and a reminder of what they undertook in the battle for human rights. The authors emphasize not only the Charter’s historical role in the reviving of democracy in Czechoslovakia but also its importance in promoting traditional ethical values and civil courage which should underpin human behavior, the values which are so often missing in our dealings today.

The exhibition is accompanied by the screening of the documentary Citizen Havel that was just shown in March at the second edition of the human rights documentary film festival One World Romania. The film is maybe one of the closest image of a president, the camera being present everywhere during Havel’s two mandates as president of a new country – The Czech Republic.
