Frantisek Storm
<< Tehnologia a facut mult rau literei>> spune Storm << A indreptat liniile si le-a racit.

ENGLISH VERSION
Graphic design from VSUP

The common international model of a graphic design studio today resembles a community of a few older and many younger colleagues from around the world, who share certain experience and who have much to talk about.
The Type Design and Typography Studio (VSUP) at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague is one of the best graphic design schools in the Czech Republic.
This exhibition presents works done by the students of the studio Type Design and Typography during the last two years. All works presented are semester and exam tasks. The collection shows several types of graphic design: type design (mostly original alphabets and their applications), cultural and social projects, freelanced design and original books.
The professors at VSUP encourage their students to express and develop their own graphic language, completely independent of their mentor’s attitude. “Our graduate is an independent, critically thinking, adult person with his/her own unique graphic expression. S/He is able to handle commissions professionally, and s/he also pursues original free work.”
Frantisek Storm
Frantisek Storm was born in 1966 in Prague, graduated in 1991 from the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague where he studied book and type design, and was an assistant at the same department until 1995.
In 1993 he founded the Storm Type Foundry, and today is a freelance type-designer, photographer, xylographer and howling computer programmer.
In 2000 Storm’s Biblon type earned the “Excellence in Typography Award” from the Type Designers Club, New York.
“It is no exaggeration to say that Storm is a bridge — most obviously, between the typographic past and the high-tech future. He takes classic typefaces, or fonts, and turns them into computerized Central European (CE) typefaces, complete with all the necessary accents and diacritical markings for languages ranging from Czech to Hungarian.

Part of Storm’s mission is to rectify those problems. A true artisan, he often goes back to the original versions of type, hunting them down from obscure sources and resurrecting them digitally.” (Evan Rail)
