DOCUMENTARY MONDAYS

89 before and after

Impreuna vom dezbate.

THE GREATEST WISH
Nejvetsi prani, Cehoslovacia, 1990, 85 min.
Regie: Jan Spata
VO ceha / Subtitrari in engleza

Ce-ti doresti in viata?

PAPER HEADS
Papirove hlavy, SK-FR-CH-D-CZ, 1995, 85 min.
Regie: Dusan Hanak
VO ceha / Subtitrari in engleza

THE GREATEST WISH
Nejvetsi prani, Czechoslovakia, 1990, 85 min.
Director: Jan Spata
VO Czech / English subtitles

“What do you wish for in life?” This was the question Jan Spata put to the younger generation in 1964. It was an era of political liberalization and therefore a time of great visions and aspirations. The first generation to come of age after the Second World War commented openly and critically about socialism. Consequently, it is not surprising that the film was banned in 1969. Jan Spata returned to the question he asked in his survey in 1989. The desires of the new generation are veering towards material security or else they openly criticize the complete lack of freedom in the country. By coincidence, the last day of shooting was 17 November, and the crew even asked the armor-clad police on Wenceslas Square what their biggest wish was. And these young men are also members of the generation that led their children to a free Czechoslovakia.

This is a personal documentary film reflecting on the Czechoslovak totalitarian regime from the end of World War II until 1989. It is a meditation on freedom and non-freedom, on the behavior of the citizen manipulated by totalitarian power. The film takes in the absurdity and humor of that era: the inability of communist functionaries to grasp reality and their existence in their own, distorted world. Footage from socialist realist films (the propaganda that was official documentary making) is contrasted with the personal and intimate perceptions of individuals. The leitmotif of the film is festive paper heads from the May Day communist workers’ holiday. It is not just a personal look back at Czechoslovakia’s past, but also portrays the uncertainties and controversies of postcommunist society. The film is a key work by Hanák, who had his own creativity stifled under the communist system.
